The Rosetree Castello was the palace of the Duchess of Placentia in Penteli mountain ~ Athens

It was built in the 19th century by the distinguished architect Kleanthis. Nowadays the Palace has been completely restored and hosts cultural events

Sophie de Marbois-Lebrun, Duchess of Plaisance or Duchess of Placentia (as the Greeks call her) was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where her father, François Barbé-Marbois, was serving as French Consul-General in the United States. She lived an extraordinary life in Italy, France and Greece and in her later years, particularly after the death of her beloved daughter Eliza, she became very eccentric

To give a few examples:

She had her daughter embalmed and placed in the basement of her house. She would grant titles of nobility to various who would visit with her and attend her meetings. She dabbled in mysticism. It is said that she maintained contacts with the various bandits that terrorized Athens. There had been rumors that she and the infamous 19th century brigand Davelis had an affair
